Getting braces is a solid step in the right direction if you’re looking to transform your smile. But they come with a lot of special rules and regulations to create successful results—so Luv Braces wants to make sure you’re well-educated! Let’s discuss some of the ways you can care for your braces.
Why Braces Maintenance Matters
Dr. Tahbaz and Dr. Rezapour use braces to do so much more than just straighten out your teeth. Your appliance can protect your oral health and set you up for successful oral hygiene for the rest of your life. Taking good care of your braces means:
- Faster and more effective treatment.
- Reduced risk of hygienic concerns like cavities and gum disease.
- Prevention of unnecessary repairs or delays.
We’re going to provide you with some great tips and tricks for your care routine to help you stay ahead of the game!
Your Daily Dose of Care
When you have braces, you’ll want to take certain consistent steps on a daily basis. This process is a combination of optimal oral health practices and the use of special tools to help with cleaning.
1. Brush and Floss Like a Pro
- Brushing: We suggest using a soft-bristled toothbrush or an orthodontic toothbrush to keep the components of your braces free of plaque and food. Brush after every meal and snack.
- Flossing: Always floss at least once a day using a floss threader or orthodontic flossers. Remember that the practice of brushing and flossing should always be both, not one or the other.
2. Use Orthodontic Tools
- Interdental Brushes: These are designed to clean the tight spaces between brackets and underwires.
- Water Flossers: A great option for effectively flushing out food particles and plaque with minimal effort.
- Orthodontic Wax: We suggest keeping this on hand at all times. You can apply wax to any areas causing irritation to your cheeks or lips.
Handling Common Issues
We can’t guarantee that your braces treatment will be absolutely, 100% free of problems—but we can promise you that we’ll work alongside you to handle any that arise!
Loose Brackets or Wires
- If a bracket comes loose, it’s important to promptly call Luv Braces to schedule a repair. Delaying this repair appointment can cause more serious issues.
- Use orthodontic wax to hold loose wires in place until your appointment.
Soreness or Discomfort
- It’s perfectly normal to experience some soreness after first getting braces or directly following adjustments where we tighten your braces.
- Use over-the-counter pain relievers and rinse with warm salt water to help alleviate discomfort.
Food Stuck in Braces
- Use an interdental brush or water flosser to remove trapped food gently.
- Avoid poking with sharp objects, as this can damage your braces.
- Swish with warm water or mouthwash to help dislodge any remaining particles.
Lost or Damaged Rubber Bands
- If a rubber band comes off, try to reattach it with clean hands. If you cannot reattach the band, call Luv Braces for guidance or to schedule a replacement.
